Robin had been out eating dinner with Detective Johnson, when he got a call on his cell. She wondered how her brother was doing. Max had given her the GPS coordinates of Keegan Morrison’s hunting camp, just in case anything went wrong.

Detective Bob Johnson got off his phone and pulled his wallet out, finding cash to cover the meal. “Gotta go.”

“What’s up?”

“Not really sure,” he said. “They said it was an accidental shooting, but I’m a little concerned.”

“Why?” She found money in her purse and put enough down to cover her meal.

“I can cover this,” Bob said.

She pulled away some of his money and said, “There. You got most of it. Now, why are you worried?”

“Dispatch said the man who called asked for me by name,” he said. “That never happens.”

“Max,” she said, standing up next to him.

“What do you know about this?”

She said nothing.

“You’re coming with me,” he said, tugging her arm.

Normally, she would have pulled away, but she needed to go with him.

They got out to the sidewalk and got into his personal vehicle—a Ford F-150 4x4 with big mud tires. She had to grasp the side handle to pull herself into the passenger seat.

Bob pulled away from the downtown restaurant and picked up speed. The snow that had fallen earlier in the day and the night before was gone now, but some of the moisture left behind gave the pavement a few slick spots of ice.

“You know what they say about men with big trucks,” she said.

He smiled. “No, but I’m sure you’ll tell me.”

“They usually have a lot of toys as well.”

“Oh. I thought you were going to say something else.”

“Like what?” She held back a grin.

“Now you’re just messing with me.”

She shrugged. “I have no idea what you’re talking about.”

He sighed. “I do have an ATV and a snowmobile.”

“And a boat.”

“Obviously. What Yooper wouldn’t have a boat?”

Soon they got onto the same road Robin had driven from the airport, which ran north and south from Marquette.

“Where was the shooting?”

“At a deer camp south of Gwinn,” Bob said.

“Is this part of the date?”

“I thought we were just doing dinner.”

“Good point.”

A call came in on the detective’s phone, which he had stuck in a holder on his dash. He let his Bluetooth kick in and he answered the call on speaker.

“Detective Johnson. We have an update on the situation south of Gwinn.” It was a woman’s voice that seemed accustomed to smoking.

“Go ahead dispatch,” Bob said.

“Life flight arrived on scene and is currently transporting two patients.”

“Two?” Bob asked.

“That’s right. GSW to the abdomen on one and another to the arm.”

“Copy that,” Bob said. “About a half hour out.”

“You want me to call in back-up for you? I could get you someone from the township.”

“Not at this time,” Bob said.

“Alright. Watch your back.” The woman hung up.

Robin wasn’t an expert, but that didn’t sound right. “How do you get an accidental shooting on two men—one to the gut and one to the arm?”

“My thoughts exactly.” He thought for
